Country capitals, city names and markers

GeoNames provides city names and city-centre coordinates under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. The downloadable point collection here is adapted by selecting places, adding common answer forms, and projecting their coordinates onto the game plates.

The point source is the reproducible GeoNames snapshot in geonamescache 3.0.2, compiled by Ramiro Gómez. Natural Earth's public-domain 1:10m Populated Places 5.1.2 supplies additional settlement names for selecting regional cities. Markers for all of those cities still use GeoNames coordinates. The separately checked entry for Comayagüela is GeoNames ID 3613314.

Capital names and seats were reviewed in November 2026. Places with shared or special capital arrangements have notes in the quiz. Only coordinates in the bundled gazetteer are used to place a guessed city.

Most silhouettes share the Outline Guessr land data. The map projects city-centre coordinates and coastlines through the same north-up local Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection. Outlying territories and island groups use labeled, independently scaled insets. The positions of tiny islands in the national insets are preserved while their symbols are enlarged.

The capital locator includes Crimea with Ukraine. Its Jerusalem boundaries are used to locate each listed capital or seat at its geographic coordinates.
